AP Art History Essay Exam CH 18-22

Your exam for our unit on the Renaissance and Baroque art is on Tuesday, 2/15. The format for this exam will be a series of short essays. There will be 5 in total, and you will have 10 minutes for each essay for a total of 50 minutes.

This is meant to simulate the format of the AP exam. Remember, there are two sections to the exam – Section I is multiple choice and Section II is a collection of essays. Section II consists of 2 long essays (30 minutes each) and 1 collection of 7 short essays (between 5-10 minutes each).

In order to be best prepared for our exam, focus on Chapters 18-22. Here are some works you should consider looking over:

  • Works by Jan van Eyck (CH 18) – be ready to discuss the use of detail and symbolism; study the Arnolfini Wedding Portrait, for example
  • Masaccio’s Holy Trinity (CH 19) – be ready to discuss its traits which lead to the development of Italian Renaissance painting
  • Observe Andrea Palladio’s (CH 20) architecture and be able to relate its details to ancient Roman architecture
  • Albrect Durer’s Adam and Eve (CH 21) – be able to differentiate its Northern European traits vs. its Italian traits
  • Caravaggio (CH 22) – be able to contrast an example of his artwork with examples from the preceding artistic era (Hint: What artistic period immediately preceded the Baroque?)

If you look over those major works and themes, you will be able to get a very high score on your test on Tuesday. Each essay will be graded on the 0-4 scale, used on the AP exam, and correlated to a numerical score for your grade. Get studying!!!

Art History Remaining Schedule to Close Out Year!

Since a lot of you are seniors in my class, I wanted to give you a head’s up about what is coming up. I want to get us through art history from the 18th century to the present. We have to move quickly and efficiently to achieve this so here is the plan:

  • 5/11 – Presentation for Chapter 29 (18th Century Art)
  • 5/13 – Work on handouts for Chapters 29 and 30 (multiple choice only!)
  • 5/17 – TEST on Chapters 17-21 (Renaissance Art!); Work on handouts for Chapters 31 and 32 (multiple choice only!)
  • 5/19 – QUIZ on Chapters 29 and 30; Presentation on Chapter 30 (19th Century Art)
  • 5/21 – Presentation on Chapter 31 (20th Century Art before 1945)
  • 5/25 – Presentation on Chapter 32 (20th Century Art after 1945); QUIZ on Chapters 31 and 32
  • 5/27 – TEST on Chapters 29-32 (Modern Art)

A note about quizzes – your quizzes are based on the multiple choice handouts you complete in class. Once you do the handouts, you should begin studying over them for the upcoming quiz. The information in the presentations will be used to augment what you have read and worked on in class.

A note about tests – the tests will be comprised of the questions straight from the quizzes! So, if you do your work in class, your quizzes will reflect that (provided you study also!). If you do not do well on the quizzes, don’t worry because practically all the questions on the quizzes will reappear on the tests for those corresponding chapters.

So, do the work in class and start studying over those questions.

Seniors – pay particular attention to this workload. You can get everything wrapped up work-wise by the 17th. All you will have to do then is study over your handouts and you will cruise on to the end of the course – and the rest of your life!!

AP Art History: Renaissance Unit Updated!

Since we have a scheduled exam for 1/29 on the Renaissance, chapters 17-21, I have finalized the chapter information under the Chapter and Periods of Study section of the site.

Under each chapter, 17-21, you will find the readings, maps, study guides, and other information which will help you prepare for our classes and the exam.

Nota bene: Chapter 21 only has 5 key terms. So, for that chapter’s flashcards, I will only require 5 key terms. If you check this site regularly, you will have less work! We’ll see who actually reads this stuff I post!
