Your exam for our unit on the Renaissance and Baroque art is on Tuesday, 2/15. The format for this exam will be a series of short essays. There will be 5 in total, and you will have 10 minutes for each essay for a total of 50 minutes.
This is meant to simulate the format of the AP exam. Remember, there are two sections to the exam – Section I is multiple choice and Section II is a collection of essays. Section II consists of 2 long essays (30 minutes each) and 1 collection of 7 short essays (between 5-10 minutes each).
In order to be best prepared for our exam, focus on Chapters 18-22. Here are some works you should consider looking over:
- Works by Jan van Eyck (CH 18) – be ready to discuss the use of detail and symbolism; study the Arnolfini Wedding Portrait, for example
- Masaccio’s Holy Trinity (CH 19) – be ready to discuss its traits which lead to the development of Italian Renaissance painting
- Observe Andrea Palladio’s (CH 20) architecture and be able to relate its details to ancient Roman architecture
- Albrect Durer’s Adam and Eve (CH 21) – be able to differentiate its Northern European traits vs. its Italian traits
- Caravaggio (CH 22) – be able to contrast an example of his artwork with examples from the preceding artistic era (Hint: What artistic period immediately preceded the Baroque?)
If you look over those major works and themes, you will be able to get a very high score on your test on Tuesday. Each essay will be graded on the 0-4 scale, used on the AP exam, and correlated to a numerical score for your grade. Get studying!!!
