Essay Exam Topic and Rubric Due 12/16

This exercise is a short essay exercise and should be limited to 10 minutes. This is the typical time limit you will be receiving on the AP exam. The essay topic will challenge your understanding of Gothic architecture in chapter 16.

Using the passage and the following image, discuss how this vision of Abbot Suger was fulfilled by the architecture and its design.

“When … the loveliness of the many-colored gems has called me away from external cares, and worthy meditation has induced me to reflect, transferring that which is material to that which is immaterial, on the diversity of the sacred virtues: then it seems to me that I see myself dwelling, as it were, in some strange region of the universe which neither exists entirely in the slime of the earth nor entirely in the purity of Heaven; and that, by the grace of God, I can be transported from this inferior to that higher world in an anagogical [mystical] manner … ”

Remember to identify – fully – this architectural feature and connect at least three elements of it to the prompt. Remember also to start with a strong, clear, thesis and then introduce your supporting evidence from there.

Homework and Flash Cards due 11/30; Exam MOVED

Make sure you are reading from your textbook (see Syllabus) and also have your Flash Cards for CH 19 completed for 11/30.

I am also moving your Exam from 12/2 to 12/6. I want to make sure we cover CH 16 in class, and we will need two class periods to do that. It is multiple choice with a total of 82 questions, following the same format as the previous exam.

TEST 10/26; Flash Cards CH 7 Due 10/26

Your test for CH 2-3, 5-6 will be held on 10/26. It will be multiple choice, so make sure you are reviewing the art work from those chapters.

Your Flash Cards for CH 7 are also due on that same day – so make sure you get them done now if you are opting the “non-Ediscio” route. They will count towards the 2nd quarter.
