Welcome Back Students and Parents

Welcome back to another great year of school! Hey, you only have a few more years left, right – so enjoy it!

This is my first year at Somerset Academy. I was teaching Latin for the past two years at a small charter school over in Miami Shores but due to budget concerns, they suspended my program despite having strong support from the community. Yet, when one door closes, another opens – and here I am.

Don’t worry that I haven’t been teaching Art History these past few years – I assure you I am well-qualified. I attended Florida State University and received my B.A. in Art History, then proceeding on to graduate school where I eventually received my M.A. in Classics (which is why I was teaching Latin!).

I also excavated in Italy from 2000-2003, and again in 2007. In 2001, until 2003, I served as a trench supervisor while in grad school at FSU. Basically, this means I was responsible for teaching other students about archaeological methodology – how to excavate and the techniques we use in the field. It was during this phase of my education that I really used my art historical training heavily – identifying various types of material remains stylistically to help develop chronology of the site we were at.

My interests in art, however, expand beyond the classical world – although my ideas about art are heavily influenced by classical forms. I am interested in various movements in art history such as impressionism, surrealism, and the works produced during the Italian and Northern Renaissance periods.

I am looking forward to getting back into Art History and examining artwork up close. It was always fun to sit in a dark room and stare at slide after slide of another form of human expression from a different epoch in history and see how things are very different but also to detect the threads of ideas that still convey meaning today.

I can’t wait to get into class discussions and to dive deep into the fountain of human expression with all of you. Welcome!
